do i need public liability insurance for my buisenss?
im selling bicycles that are designed and manufactured by a company in canada, ipurchase the frames then assymble them here in the us at my busienss and resell them as complete bikes.
if some one should by one and, lets say,{the weld from the frame breaks} am i responsable or the company that made it?
What you need is a Commercial General Liability Policy (also known as a CGL Policy) which includes Products/Completed Operations Coverage. Regardless of whether you are at fault or “liable” if the frame breaks due to a faulty weld, if you are sued you would have to hire a lawyer to defend the case at your own expense if you do not have insurance. In the same scenario, as long as the CGL Policy includes coverage for Product Liability, the insurance company will provide you with an attorney to offer a defense and will be pay the judgement up to the policy limit if you are found liable by the court.
In addition to a CGL Policy, you will also probably need coverage for loss of your inventory, loss of income, Workers Compensation if you have employees and a commercial automobile policy if you transport the bicycles inside a vehicle.
You should consult a local independent insurance agent that will be able to assist you with reviewing your business exposures and advise the best way to provide coverage at a reasonable cost. You can find an agent by consulting this website: http://www.iiaba.net/agentlocator/findagent.aspx.
I hope this information helps. Good Luck
